SPONSOR RUSSELL BALL ON HIS UKI CAPITAL CITIES BIKE CHALLENGE

Fund4Trees

Founder of charity Fund4Trees and long-time member Russell Ball has begun a cycling trip that will take him to four capital cities within the United Kingdom and Ireland, planting trees in schools along the way.

The ride started in London on 15 April, calling at Cardiff before going over to Ireland by ferry to visit Dublin and Belfast. Russell will head back across to the mainland, then onto Edinburgh on 24 April, returning to London on 1 May.

The aim of the ‘Capital Cities Ride: UK & Ireland’ is to raise the profile of Donate One Job and Donate One Hour, two Fund4Trees initiatives to encourage tree officers, consultants and contractors to provide a small annual charitable donation to the registered Charity.

All ride costs are being sponsored by Arb Approved Contractor Gristwood & Toms and the trees supplied our corporate Member Barcham Trees.

Russell plants a tree with school children

Russell said:
"It’s another huge challenge but I’m looking forward to meeting all the school children en route plus anyone who cares to join me on their bike".

Russell completed a successful Land’s End-John O’Groats bike ride last year.

Please show your support for Russell and his inspirational work and passion in any way you can.

EXPERTS’ QUESTION TIME 3
– MANAGING RISK: PRACTICAL APPLICATION

11TH JUNE 2015

A panel of four industry experts will answer questions submitted to them.

Dr David Lonsdale. Sharing some of the key principles he has experienced as an Expert Witness, David will evaluate some of the methods by which tree risk can be managed, including the ISA's TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification). David will explore the role of the expert, and how the courts have viewed cases involving trees and people.

Tony Kirkham. Tony has worked at Kew Gardens for the past 35 years, and is now Curator of the Trees and Plant Collection. He will explain how Kew manages the tree resource, and how he has ensured the system of inspections is defendable.

Kevin Martin. Kevin Martin is Tree Manager at Kew Gardens. He is responsible for the day-to-day management of the trees, overseeing inspections and programmes of work, both planned and reactive. He will share what is involved, and how he ensures that his approach is defendable. Kevin will share how he is using TRAQ principles to manage the trees at Kew.

Neville Fay. Neville is principal consultant with Treework Environmental Practice. He will be presenting on the principles of managing ancient and other veteran trees including reference to case studies. He is past chair of the Ancient Tree Forum and chaired the drafting committee of the NTSG.

There will be an extended period at the end of the day for discussion on issues raised.

THAMES AND CHILTERN BRANCH:

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

SATURDAY 23RD MAY 2015
RUNNYMEDE ESTATE OFFICE, NORTH LODGE, OLD WINDSOR, WINDSOR, WEST BERKSHIRE SL4 2JL

In order to recognise the 800th Anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta this year’s AGM will be held at Runnymede, Windsor.

Please meet at the Runnymede Estate Office for 9.30 with the AGM to start at 9.45. Followed by a Guided Walk of the Ankerwycke Yew with National Trust Area Ranger Jamie Preston.

Runnymede is seen by many as the birthplace of modern democracy, with the picturesque open landscape beside the Thames being witness to King John's historic sealing of the Magna Carta 800 years ago on 15 June 1215. Located at Ankerwycke, the Ankerwycke Yew is The National Trust's oldest tree, at 2,500 years old. Whilst the Magna Carta is said to have been sealed at Runnymede, there are those who argue that the event actually took place on the other side of the river, at Ankerwycke, perhaps under this very Yew.

For those that wish to stay on after our visit there will be an optional foray into Great Windsor Park with our Chairman Bill Cathcart to look at some of the Ancient trees that have been recently recorded onto Great Windsor Park’s Database.
