ISSUE 28

MAY 2015

From the CEO

Karen Martin - CEO

The big day is almost here and we are looking forward to seeing all of you on 5th and 6th June at Westonbirt for our 2015 ARB Show. We recently visited the ARB Show site and The National Arboretum itself, and I can safely say that you won’t be disappointed by the new venue. Elsewhere nominations are open for The Arboricultural Association Award as we seek to recognise a significant and positive contribution to the arboricultural industry or profession by an individual. The award will be presented at the Annual Conference in September. We were also thrilled to see over 40 students take part in our Northern College Climbing Competition, breaking the record set in 2014. As the new government begins its five-year term, our goals remain unchanged as we work to inspire society to understand the value of amenity trees, to influence the decision-makers to value, secure, fund and promote amenity trees, and to improve understanding of trees and their environment.

3ATC CHALLENGE – NORTHERN CHALLENGE

Over 40 students took part in the 3ATC Northern College Climbing Competition sponsored by Gustharts on 29 April, with closely fought races for the best time in the Year 1 and Year 2 categories. Congratulations to Plumpton College and East Durham College for winning Year 1 and Year 2 respectively (see results below). Nick Pott, who runs the competitions, said: ‘Those selected to represent their college should be proud of their achievements; the tree tasks were set up by some very competent climbers to test your ability, so in completing the event you have all done well. I would also like to praise you all for your attitude and professionalism during the event.’ The winning teams are now invited to take part in the UK CCC Final at the 2015 AA ARB Show on Friday 5 June, where they will meet the winners of the Southern competition sponsored by STEIN which takes place at Bicton College on 20 May. Good luck to all taking part. Check our Facebook page for results and pictures from the event.
